Conan the Barbarian
Conan the Barbarian, the movie that turned Arnold Schwarzenegger into a global superstar, is a prime example of a match made in heaven. It’s the movie that macho maverick writer-director John Milius was born to make, and Arnold was genetically engineered for his role as the muscle-bound, angst-ridden hero created in Robert E. Howard’s pulp novels. Oliver Stone contributed to Milius’s screenplay, and the production design by comic artist Ron Cobb represents a perfect cinematic realization of Howard’s fantasy world. To avenge the murder of his parents, Conan tracks down the evil Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) with the help of Queen Valeria (played by buff B-movie vixen Sandahl Bergman) and Subotai the Mongol (Gerry Lopez). Aptly described by critic Roger Ebert as “the perfect fantasy for the alienated pre-adolescent,” this blockbuster is just as enjoyable for adults who haven’t lost their youthful imagination. –Jeff Shannon
Conan the Destroyer
The dark, brooding tone of Conan the Barbarian is replaced in this rousing sequel by a lighter, more humorous tone and one of the campiest casts ever assembled. This time, Conan is assigned by a duplicitous queen (Sarah Douglas) to escort a virgin princess (Olivia d’Abo) on a treacherous trek to a crystal palace where they will retrieve a priceless gemstone. Basketball champ and self-described Lothario Wilt Chamberlain plays Bombaata, a warrior sent on a secret mission to kill Conan, and the androgynous Grace Jones plays Zula, a wild woman who becomes Conan’s loyal ally. Some consider this sequel a disappointment, but the film makes no apologies for its silliness, and that’s the key to its success as gloriously pulpy entertainment. –Jeff Shannon

Based on Takei Hiroyuki’s long-running manga, the animated Shaman King (2001) rapidly won a worldwide following. In America, trimmed episodes ran on Fox Kids; the disc offers uncut versions. Pint-sized Morty Manto is shocked to discover his new cram school classmate Yoh Asakura consorts with ghosts–and Yoh’s assurance that only “good guys” can see ghosts provides scant comfort. Yoh is a shaman-in-training, and he needs to find a Guardian Ghost with whom he can merge to fight enemies. With Morty’s reluctant aid, Yoh clears up a 600-year-old misunderstanding and makes legendary samurai Amidaru his Guardian. Everything seems to be looking up, including Morty’s blood pressure, when Yoh and Morty encounter the sneering Tao Len, who intends to become the only shaman in Tokyo. Although some of the vocal performances feel overly arch, Shaman King combines an appealing buddy comedy with supernatural adventures. (Rated TV PG: Violence) –Charles Solomon

Although these three OAVs (original animation videos) were released years apart–and years after the original Project A-Ko feature–they all share a single plot: the battle between A-Ko, who possesses super-powers, and the super-rich, mecha-building B-Ko for the affections of the infantile C-Ko. (The names of the characters play off the Japanese equivalent of “Girl A, Girl B” to designate extras in a script.) In “Cinderella Rhapsody,” A-Ko falls for the dashing motorcyclist Kei. B-Ko wants whatever A-Ko wants, and they’re soon fighting over Kei and C-Ko. But Kei only has eyes for C-Ko. In “Final,” C-Ko turns out to be a long-lost alien princess whose people come to reclaim her, but the story remains underdeveloped. C-Ko leaves with the alien fleet but turns up at A-Ko’s door the next morning and announces, “I came back.” Viewers may wonder why everyone is so gaga about a whiny case of arrested development like C-Ko, whether she’s a princess or not. In Japan, the pursuit of C-Ko is seen as a manifestation of the intense, platonic friendships among high school students, rather than lesbian attraction, but a weird sexuality pervades the stories, which include androgynous bodybuilders in dresses. All three episodes are silly enough to make Tenchi Muyo! sound like Nietzsche. Rated 13 and up for brief nudity, occasional sexual humor, and violence. –Charles Solomon

The Bloodstained Shadow is a movie that everyone can enjoy together.This is something not usually seen in movies of this type, so it makes it an unusual, yet pleasant experience.The movie is absolutely fabulous and Lino Capolicchio deliver some award winning performances in this movie. I also think Stefania Casini was spectacular!

Can the brothers uncover the identity of this deranged fiend, even while they are being tortured by their own nightmares of an unspeakable childhood trauma?
Directed by Antonio Bido (WATCH ME WHEN I KILL) and known in Italy as SOLAMENTE NERO, this suspenseful giallo co-stars Stefania Casini (SUSPIRIA) and Massimo Serato (KILLER NUN), and features one of the last scores arranged and performed by the legendary band Goblin (DEEP RED, SUSPIRIA).

A missile silo near Topeka, Kansas becomes a New Age refuge for a very soft-spoken couple.

Hideaki Anno offers a fourth version of the controversial and widely debated ending of his 1995 watershed series. The most significant addition is a meeting between the sinister cabal SEELE and Kaworu, the mysterious Fifth Child, in episode 24. Although unmoved by their statements about humanity’s future, Kaworu assures SEELE, “All will be as the Lilim (humans) direct it.” The final two episodes include only minor changes to the subtitles; the complex collage of images that suggests Shinji’s descent into schizophrenia remains unaltered and intriguing. The “sneak peek” at the live-action Evangelion film largely consists of design sketches for the Evas and settings. It’s odd to see Rei, Asuka and Misato as ordinary humans rather than stylized drawings. (There are no visuals of Shinji). The live-action imagery is more realistic but not more interesting than the original animation artwork.
